The Bishop's Palace has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years. Surrounded by a breathtaking moat, you can cross a flagstone drawbridge, walk under the portcullis and experience a true hidden gem in the heart of the City of Wells.

There are 14 acres of gardens to explore, including the beautiful well pools from which the city takes its name, family events, guided walks, gifts from the shop and perhaps even a slice of cake with your afternoon tea. You are also welcome to look around the Bishop's private Chapel, explore the ruined Great Hall and meet the famous mute swans who live alongside the moat and ring a bell when they want food.

The Bishop’s Palace dates from the early-thirteenth century when Bishop Jocelin Trotman, the first Bishop to hold the title Bishop of Bath and Wells, received a crown licence to build a residence and deer park on land to the south of the Cathedral of St Andrew.

Did You Know?

The Palace is famous for its mute swans, which ring a bell in the moat to be fed! The swans at the Palace were first taught this by the daughter of Bishop Hervey in the 1870s and is a tradition which continues to this day.

There are currently no events happening at Bishop's Palace and Gardens .

Guides WantedAdded 18 Mar 2013

Have you got time and your hands and would like to learn a new skill? Here at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells, we are looking for new volunteers to join our team of guides.

Extending our range of tours that are available to booked groups, we are looking for guides to lead Palace Water Walks and Horticulture Tours which will tell our visitors about the history of the gardens and the flora and fauna that grows there.

As well as learning about the importance of water to this heritage site and the gardens you will be given expert tuition on leading groups on a tour, including groups of children and young people here on educational visits.

This is the ideal role for people who love history, gardens and most importantly, other people!

We already have a passionate and dedicated team of guides here but we are always looking to extend the family. Full training and support is given to get you going and it’s also a great way to make new friends and meet likeminded people.

To apply for this volunteer post please contact Anneli Connold on 01749 988111 ext 202 (Weds – Fri).
